Residents and staff members have been busy planting a dignity tree at a Blackpool care home, with the purpose to increase dignity in and around the home.

A peace rose tree was planted at MHA Pennystone Court, with residents laying a stone with a message on what dignity means to them.

The home provides 36 places for dementia and residential care and wanted to offer everyone associated with the home an opportunity to just reflect and take in what the term dignity means to them.

Residents helped staff members in planting the tree and so far the arrival of the tree has been a successful addition to the home.

Carol Godfrey, dignity champion at the home, said: “The idea behind planting a tree was to see it grow with staff, residents and our home in general.

“Here at MHA Pennystone Court, the word dignity means a lot to us and it is part of the foundation of our values and beliefs.

“The residents have really enjoyed getting stuck in and helping plant the tree.

“The feedback from them has been great and just what I wanted to hear when I decided to plant the tree.

“A lot of them like to just go and stand next to it or look at it when they are going for a walk.

“They take a lot of comfort from the tree and have placed stones with a message on what dignity means to them next to the tree.

“The tree will mark three core principles for us: dignity, respect and inclusion and I am confident it will grow and stay as a reminder of how important these principles are for us.”
