IT’S a double celebration at Kingswood Homes after two of the homebuilder’s site managers were named amongst the top 5% nationwide.
Dave Read and Daniel Cato have received NHBC Pride in the Job “Quality” Awards for their roles in overseeing construction at The Hollies in Forton and Green Hills in Blackburn respectively.
They’re among just 450 out of more than 10,000 site managers to be recognised in the prestigious awards.
The joint winners are the first for Kingswood Homes, based in Little Hoole, Lancashire, to receive the accolade.
Dave, a first time winner, said: “It’s a massive achievement for the team at The Hollies. I was elated when I found out.
“For Pride in the Job the management of the site is judged from the foundations right the way through to the finished product and includes a well-managed and organised site. You have to deliver the best possible workmanship to win. It shows that we care about what we do and we’re building the best homes that we can.”
Dave, who started his career as a joiner, has worked for Kingswood for more than a decade and has seen the company move from being a building company working on domestic and commercial projects to developing sites of its own.
“Site management is a very rewarding career but you have to work hard. We’re lucky that the trades working on site are really good as without them I wouldn’t have been able to win the award – it’s a team effort,” explained Dave, 41 from Rufford, near Ormskirk,
On a typical day, Dave oversees 20 to 40 people working on site at The Hollies.
Kingswood’s innovative Shape Your Home concept, which allows homebuilders to configure the internal layout of their home by selecting from a range of floor plans captured the NHBC inspectors’ attention.
“Shape Your Home is something the inspectors said was a nice option for customers as it’s something different from other housebuilders and means they can choose the layout that suits them,” Dave added.
Previous winner Daniel was recognised by the NHBC for his role in overseeing work at Green Hills in Blackburn.
“This is my fourth Pride in the Job Award, but the first since I joined Kingswood and the hardest one yet,” he said.
“I have two assistants working with 80 to 100 people on site and it’s a real team effort – everyone’s over the moon with the win, It’s one of the top awards in the industry and gives customers confidence in the quality of their home.”
Daniel has worked for Kingswood for 18 months and was recently promoted from senior site manager to project manager.
“Managing the team on site is key – you have to get the best out of the team and ensure everyone puts the hard work in,” he added.
Daniel, 28, from Fleetwood, began his career as an apprentice joiner and moved into management aged just 20.
“I finished one day as a joiner and went back as an assistant site manager the next day,” he recalled.
The judging process assess site managers over a 12-month period with multiple inspections covering consistency, attention to detail, leadership, interpretation of drawings and specifications, technical expertise, and health and safety.
Construction director Stuart Bullough said: “Since I joined Kingswood Homes last year, we have developed a fantastic culture driven towards quality and teamwork. I’ve been encouraging all of the site managers to make a conscious effort to be contenders for the Pride in the Job Awards as quality should be expected as standard. The judging process is rigorous and only the best site managers are recognised. I’m immensely proud of Dave, Danny and their teams – they’ve all worked extremely hard to achieve the high standards the NHBC inspectors demand. They’re worthy winners of this fantastic accolade. “
