Gifted mathematicians from Abbey College Manchester recently excelled in a prestigious mathematics competition, with one talented student entering the next stage of the competition, reserved for the brightest 1000 students in the country.

Students from the city centre-based college competed against 650,000 others from across the nation in the highly-respected tournament, organised by the UK Mathematics Trust. The cohort put their knowledge to the ultimate test in a bid to qualify for a much-coveted place in the British Mathematics Olympiad team.

A group of four students participated in the Team Challenge where they worked together against the clock to solve a series of complex mathematical problems. Out of the 25 schools contending in the challenging round, the Abbey Manchester team secured a highly-desirable top five finish for the second year in a row.

Fourteen Abbey Manchester students entered into the Individual Senior Challenge, with one student from the leading independent college going on to enter the esteemed British Mathematical Olympiad. A trio of entrants from the college additionally secured a highly-desirable Gold Award, an accolade given to the top 10% of entrants.

Mathematics teacher Andrew Duggan commented: “This is a fantastic achievement once again, and we are incredibly proud of our students for continuing to excel in this national competition.”

“The problems presented throughout the tournament required imaginative and creative thinking, in addition to sound mathematical knowledge appropriate to the age group. It was admirable to watch our students work collectively as a team, cooperating with each other to reach their solutions. Let’s hope for even more success next year.”
