Over the lockdown period and COVID restrictions, residents from Paisley Lodge Care Home in Armley, Leeds have been enjoying lots of indoor activities, from indoor games, music therapy, arts and crafts, movie afternoons and food tasting sessions.

But the highlight of their week was the mobile zoo experience. As residents haven’t been able to take part in this type of activity since 2019 it was a real treat. They enjoyed an educational and visual session and were introduced to a variety of animal species including snakes, bearded dragons and a hedgehog lookalike.

The firm favourite was the American red footed tortoise, Albert, who was very big and quite noisy. The residents loved getting to know Albert, asking how old he was and what he liked to eat.

Sarah Armitage, Orchard’s Operations Director for the Northern Region, said “Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the visit and seemed keen to meet the animals, touching them and asking lots of questions.  At the end of the session, they thanked the zoologist for coming and asked him to come again.”
