Pareto Financial Planning, the award-winning Manchester based financial services business, today announced that a treasured piece of Manchester’s artistic and educational heritage has been officially commemorated with a new plaque at the former and original home of the Manchester Secondary School of Art.
The plaque, installed at Pareto FP’s Manchester HQ, at the Old School House on Byrom Street, marks the site of a pioneering institution that helped shape the creative lives of hundreds of students, and the city’s cultural legacy.
Founded in 1950 by visionary educator Earnest Goodman, the Manchester Secondary School of Art was a first-of-its-kind institution in England. Dedicated to developing young artistic talent, the school quickly became a landmark in creative education, nurturing students who would go on to contribute significantly to the UK’s art, design, and cultural sectors.
When a group of the school’s former students, led by former pupil Geoffrey Wood, approached Pareto with the idea of installing a commemorative plaque, the response was immediate and enthusiastic.
“It’s a small gesture, but one that carries immense meaning,” said a John Stevenson MBE and Founder at Pareto said; “We are honoured to support this tribute to Manchester’s creative legacy. It’s a reminder that the spaces we inhabit today were once the birthplace of imagination, growth, and life-changing education.”
Reflecting on the journey to recognition, Geoffrey Wood said: “Ten years ago, I came across a Facebook group for the Manchester High School of Art and couldn’t believe my luck. There were 635 members, former students I hadn’t seen or heard from in over 60 years. Our time at the school was a life-changing privilege. With the unanimous support of the group, we pursued a commemorative plaque. Despite setbacks with official channels, we decided to fund it ourselves. We’re incredibly grateful to Pareto for being so like-minded and supportive.”
This initiative not only preserves the memory of a unique school but also honours the impact of education, community, and creativity in Manchester’s history. Visitors and passers-by are now encouraged to look up and reflect on the artists, memories, and spirit of innovation that began in the Old School House in the centre of Manchester.
Pareto Financial Planning has more than £1 billion of assets under management and was named as one of the Top 100 advisers in the UK by the Financial Times and Citywire New Model Adviser in 2024.
