Trafford Council has adopted new planning guidance and revised the boundaries for eight Conservation Areas. The guidance is in the form of Conservation Area Appraisals and Management Plans for Ashton upon Mersey, Brogden Grove, Dunham Town, Dunham Woodhouses, Empress, Flixton, Longford and Warburton.

More land and properties have been included in the Conservation Areas, to help to manage and protect the historic interest of the areas. In addition a small area of land in Empress Conservation Area and seven properties on Church Road in the Flixton Conservation Area have been taken out of the Conservation Areas as they are no longer considered to meet the designation criteria.

The Plans were subject to a six week consultation. All comments received were assessed and several changes made in response to these. These can be read in more detail in the Consultation Statements available online via the address below.

The Conservation Area Appraisals (CAA) are a concise description of the Conservation Area and they highlight those elements of the historical, architectural and natural environment that contribute to the special interest of the area. Conservation Area Management Plans are the next step after the character statement and they provide guidance through policy statements to assist in the preservation and enhancement of the Conservation Area. Together the documents provide guidance for property owners or occupiers to ensure historic features are protected and/or enhanced within the conservation area. Guidance is also given for owners who want to make changes to their properties.

The Conservation Areas boundaries have been revised as part of a programme to review all of Trafford’s Conservation Areas against revised guidance produced by Historic England.

Under (Section 69(2) of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990) Local Authorities must review their Conservation Areas from time to time. The programme started in 2014 and to date 20 of Trafford’s 21 Conservation Areas have been reviewed.

The documents are also available for public inspection:
