Taking your driving test is a huge milestone in any motorist’s life, and while some are able to pass their tests first time, most have to take a couple of attempts.
Just Tyres have analysed data from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency to reveal which towns in the UK are the easiest and most difficult to pass your driving test, based on the most recent pass rates.
It turns out that Rochdale, Greater Manchester, is the hardest place in the UK to pass your driving test, with an overall pass rate of just 31.1%. Speke, Merseyside, isn’t far behind with a pass rate of 33.5% making it the 5th hardest place to pass.

Richard Slater, Approved Driving Instructor (ADI), comments:
“While some of the most common advice when approaching a driving test is to ‘just relax’, we all know that it’s really hard to completely relax before any kind of assessment – unless you’re superhuman.
Focusing on trying to relax, will only remind you that you’re not relaxed and lead to you being unfocused on the task at hand. Instead, try to observe any nervousness as just a feeling to notice, but remind yourself that this is not the driving force of your actions on the day – if you’ll excuse the pun.
During your test, you will be expected to drive in a safe and legal manner under the test conditions to demonstrate your ability to be a safe driver on the road.
To do this, you simply need to be observant and responsive to the changing dynamics of the road.
You will find that there is a natural flow to safe driving, that comes from your ability to respond quickly, and this will enable you to manage any situations that arise on the road safely, and in accordance with the highway code.
In a nutshell, passing your driving test is about your ‘ability to respond’ to the road in the moment, which follows from your observation. And if all else fails – just remember to breathe!”
