Lancaster House Hotel has played host to an evening with George Sandeman, the chairman of Sandeman, one of the most renowned producers of port and wine.
It provided an opportunity for the hotel’s cocktail making specialists to display their skills and the innovative use of port in drinks such as the Ruby Port Martini and the Port Cobbler cocktail.

English Lakes Hotels Resorts & Venues’ long established links with the family business date back to the hotel’s opening in 1991, when the Sandeman Bar was named in its honour.
Following a convivial dinner in the hotel’s Foodworks restaurant, Mr Sandeman delivered an informative talk about the history of port, its production and its different tastes and textures. He was then presented with a selection of Sandeman’s cocktails to sample.
Andy Lemm from English Lakes Hotels Resorts & Venues, the General Manager at Lancaster House, says: “It was lovely to meet Mr Sandeman and hear about the company’s two principal styles of port production, from full bodied, fruit driven ruby ports to wood aged tawny ports which are more aromatic in flavour.
“The bar team are always keen to develop and extend their drinks preparation skills and they got the chance to show George how they use port as a key ingredient in some of our most popular cocktails.”
The principles of Sandeman port production have remained almost unchanged from those employed by its founder in the 1790s. Lancaster House offers a range of Sandeman’s ports and cocktails inspired by the brand. “It’s easy to see how and why they have become one of the most respected port producers in the industry,” adds Mr Lemm.
