Blinds are a great way to add a touch of style to any room, but a recent survey by FastKlean revealed that they’re the least cleaned item across UK bathrooms.

Condensation puts blinds in any room at risk of mould and mildew growth, plus the inevitable dust build up can make cleaning blinds a tedious task! But it’s time to welcome the warmer weather with a fresh and clean home.

Experts from online blinds retailer, BlindsbyPost, have revealed their top cleaning tips to get some of the most popular types of blinds looking their best. Here, Oliver Hudson of BlindsbyPost offers his expertise to keep blinds spick and span this spring.

Motorised blinds

Despite the fancy motor and electronic equipment, motorised blinds can be cleaned with ease.

For fabric motorised blinds, a vacuum with a soft brush attachment is a great option for a light dust. A rubber or dry sponge can also be very effective at removing dirt and dust from fabric blinds, while a lambs wool cloth is a good choice for venetian motorised blinds.

Don’t forget that motorised blinds shouldn’t have detergents or water sprayed or soaked directly onto the blind as this can permanently damage the fabric and motor. Spot treat any marks with a damp towel instead.

Wooden blinds

Wooden blinds can be the most intimidating to clean due to all the slats. Fear not, there’s a quick and easy method – use a feather duster or soft, clean, anti-static cloth. It also might come as a surprise that wooden blinds can be thoroughly cleaned without the hassle of having to take them down from the window.

To clean, simply have the blind fully closed with the slats facing both upwards and downwards to ensure each side of every slat is thoroughly dusted. Make sure to run the cloth or duster in the same direction as the slat, for example if the slats are facing upward run the cloth or duster in an upward motion.

For an even more thorough clean, rotate the slats until they’re horizontal and wipe each one individually. Remember to maintain wooden blinds effectively, dust them as part of a regular cleaning routine rather than waiting until the spring.

Roof blinds

Roof blinds are a great option for attic rooms and conservatories, however their placement can make it challenging to give them a thorough clean.

For a light dust, simply use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment and press lightly on both the front and back to avoid damaging the fabric. If the blind is in need of a deeper clean, use a damp sponge dipped in lukewarm water and wipe gently. For stubborn marks and stains, a mild detergent can be used but make sure to try it on an inconspicuous area first.
