Pupils, parents and staff members from Beech Hall School recently participated in a demanding physical challenge, the Great North Swim.

The determined team of 36 from the Tytherington-based school travelled to Lake Windermere where they participated in a variety of tasks, pushing themselves to the limit on a journey of personal challenge. While the youngest member of the group at age 11 undertook an arduous 250-metre swim, older swimmers conquered up to 10 kilometres of open water.

To prepare for the mission, members of the Beech Hall cohort were put through their paces in a series of intensive training sessions, counting the lengths in the school’s outdoor swimmingpool and participating in practice open water swims.

Senior Head Boy, Luke Stevens gave a highly-impressive performance on the day, combatting the 10K swim in 4 hours and 9 minutes, despite breaking his hand only five weeks beforehand. Luke embarked on the demanding mission and displayed his sheer determination to raise vital funds for two charities, MS International Federation and Disability Rights UK.

Headmaster James Allen commented, “We had an amazing day in Lake Windermere full of personal challenge, endurance, determination, camaraderie and success.

“The Great North Swim is a demanding, yet exceptionally rewarding task which presented our school community with the perfect opportunity for personal challenge, allowing each individual to develop their skills and self-confidence.”
