Residents and business owners in Burnley borough planning to apply for financial support to make their property more resilient to flooding have until the end of March to put in applications.
Burnley Council has been running a flood resilience grant scheme since floods affected parts of the borough on Boxing Day 2015. Under the scheme, properties that were flooded as a result of Storm Eva may be entitled to grants of up to £5,000, provided as part of government support.
The grants are to help fund additional flood resilience or resistance measures for those properties that were flooded in December 2015 to help better prepare them for potential future floods. They could, for example, help prevent flood water from entering the property or support recovery work if it does.
Mick Cartledge, the council’s chief operating officer, said: “We’ve had a good response from residents and businesses who have applied for financial help to make their property more flood resistant.
“It’s over 12 months since Storm Eva and along with other Lancashire councils a deadline for the receipt of any new flood resilience grants has been set for 31st March 2017.
“If someone was affected by the Boxing Day 2015 floods and feels they could be eligible for a grant they should apply now.”
Any existing applications will still be dealt with after the deadline.
So far the council has approved 35 business applications and paid out a total of £147,521, and 32 residential applications totalling £139,129. All grants are funded by the national government.
