MANCHESTER Science Partnerships (MSP), the UK’s leading science and technology park operator, has agreed a landmark partnership with Manchester’s historic Museum of Science and Industry underlining Manchester’s commitment to be an internationally renowned science city and hotbed of innovation.
The deal crowns a milestone 2016 for science in the city region. Manchester is currently the European City of Science and was also the focal point for scientific research, debate and discussion during the summer when it hosted the European Science Open Forum (ESOF).
This year MSP underlined its commitment to the city region as it announced plans during ESOF to invest £60m in expanding Citylabs its bio-medical centre of excellence, while the company is also at the heart of leading-edge tech innovation through its involvement with the CityVerve partnership, the pioneering smart cities demonstrator.
MSP has been a long term supporter of the Manchester Science Festival, produced each year by the Museum of Science and Industry, and has now extended its relationship with the museum.
In October MSP sponsored and hosted the ‘Art and Science of Dementia’ debate at Citylabs 1.0 to celebrate the 10thanniversary of the Manchester Science Festival, an event which attracted more than 120 people and helped to raise public awareness of dementia.
Over the next year, the partnership will see MSP work with the museum to promote and host inspiring events and develop closer links between the museum and leaders in industry. The partnership will also see MSP develop its relationship with the Manchester Science Festival, and support the new Trans Pennine STEM Ambassador Hub – an important programme to inspire the next generation to enjoy and undertake STEM (Science Technology Engineering & Maths) subjects.
Anne Dornan, Head of Innovation at Manchester Science Partnerships said: “The Museum of Science and Industry plays a vital role educating and inspiring all generations, be that in showcasing Manchester’s crucial role in the Industrial Revolution, celebrating the work of today’s innovators or giving hundreds of local children the opportunity to meet Tim Peake.
“MSP is a committed supporter of the Museum of Science and Industry and its work to elevate the STEM agenda is of critical importance to nurturing the next generation of scientists and innovators and ensuring that the knowledge economy will be successful in Manchester for years to come.”
“After a landmark year for science in Manchester, where the city hosted the Euro Science Open Forum, we are excited to continue this focus through closer links with the museum. We share many common values, notably a passion for science and innovation, and this move is a natural step for us.”
Sally MacDonald, Director of the Museum of Science and Industry, said: “I am delighted that Manchester Science Partnerships have strengthened their relationship with the Museum of Science and Industry with this new partnership. Manchester is a city built on science and it is wonderful to be able to create networks that celebrate, promote and develop future opportunities for people in the North West.”
