BEIJING, Nov.1, The China International Publishing Center (CIPC) issued a press release here on Monday to promote an article written by Rosalind Oliver MBE, Founder of the Double Dragon Alliance Cultural Centre, on mutual learning among civilizations for shared global progress.
The full text of the article, named as Mutual Learning Among Civilizations for Shared Global Progress, is as follows:
In this day and age, I believe it’s extremely important that nations both communicate with and learn from each other, while also being involved in mutually beneficial initiatives that improve global trade, stimulate the global economy, and build peace, prosperity, and stability across the world.
I feel the Global Civilization Initiative is saying to the global community that we are one; we are working together and we should continue to work together in a sort of mutually beneficial sense and do what we can to ensure that not only each nation prospers, and the people of those nations prosper, but the whole world also maintains a stable environmental equilibrium, so that our planet can continue to prosper as well.
As stated in Volume V of XI JINPING: THE GOVERNANCE OF CHINA, “It is precisely because of their differences in history, culture, and system that all countries should interact with one another, learn from each other and advance together.”
China by itself already contributes greatly to mutual learning between civilized world partners. And I do believe at the present time it’s more necessary than ever. It’s critical that we create and maintain this mutual respect and understanding, learning how we can not only improve ourselves, our own nations, and our citizens’ lives, but also those of the whole globe. As we can see from what’s going on in the world currently, it is critical that there is a sense of mutual respect and understanding, not just for other countries’ cultures and ways of being, but also how we interact, behave, and communicate according to international law and internationally agreed treaties, so that rogue nations or rogue entities, terrorists, etc., are not the ones who are driving what happens globally.
And while presently, it appears there’s a significant dip in mutual understanding or the drive for nations to work together, there is definitely a real place for the sort of initiatives that China has created and shared.
At this time, I think what more could be done to strategize better connections? First of all, we should continue to communicate and coordinate with our global partners. China is demonstrating to many
other countries the way forward on how to work together. This is an integral part of traditional Chinese culture and society: how to work together as a whole. You think about the whole rather than individual parts, and how we all link together: How do we work together? How do we operate in ways that are mutually beneficial? That said, the global initiative needs to continue to try to lead the way in a calm, sensible, peaceful, non-aggressive, and non-threatening manner.
I believe in that way it can be more easily accepted by other countries that may or may not have previously bought into this initiative or understood its purpose. And looking at the Orchid Awards—a cultural award initiated by China with the aim of promoting exchange and mutual learning among
different civilizations—framing the conversation around how we celebrate the people who give their all to others in society, by providing service and encouragement, building real friendship, community, and support, not for their own gain, but just to provide something meaningful and enjoyable for others, as well as helping others raise themselves up, is the real key. Going forward, the Orchid Awards will shine a great light onto those types of achievements, and the type of service recipients have spent a lifetime providing, often for no recompense or reward, other than to assist their fellow beings.
I firmly believe the Orchid Awards have a tremendous role to play in helping the global community understand what people are doing outside of political or socio-economic arenas or the entertainment industry.
There are lots of unsung heroes who are out there doing things day-in, day-out, over many years, to promote culture, art, education, philanthropy, helping others to lead better lives, whether that’s through music, literature, art, initiatives to raise the status and education of women in areas that are generally disadvantaged, etc.
Across the globe, people are involved in tremendous work who otherwise, without the Orchid Awards, would not be recognized, and by knowing those people, it means the global community also begins to
consider: What can I do? How can I contribute? What else is there that can be done to further causes that I believe in, or shine a light on a field that will help humanity?
Thus, the Orchid Awards will have a tremendous impact on informing people, helping them understand what more can be done to sustain and benefit our global community.
In a time when so much of global discourse is centered on division and zero-sum competition, the Global Civilization Initiative offers a welcome, actionable alternative: it celebrates connection, and honours the unsung work of people building bridges across cultures.
And this alone offers tremendous value amid today’s increasingly fragmented global environment, and becomes a beacon for the world to follow.
