Leading housebuilder David Wilson Homes has made a donation of £500 to Southport Soup Kitchen, as part of its efforts to support the charities working hard to help those in need in the current climate.
Southport Soup Kitchen, located close to the housebuilder’s Pavilion Gardens development, received the contribution to support its open-door services to provide a safe space for those most vulnerable in the local community.
Having operated for over 20 years and run entirely by a team of dedicated volunteers, the charity has provided a welcoming space for those in need in Southport.
By providing free nutritional meals, the charity is committed to improving quality of life and restoring dignity to those it helps. With the aim to support those in need regardless of their circumstance, Southport Soup Kitchen provides services including hot food, emotional support, essential provisions and assistance for its beneficiaries to become self-sufficient.
Maria Tummons, Charity Manager at Southport Soup Kitchen, said: “Many more people are having to choose between heating and eating. We are seeing the results of this with numbers of guests using our service having more than doubled over the last six months.
“The Soup Kitchen relies solely on donations to continue the work we do in the local community. With no paid staff, donors can rest assured that any contributions made go straight to the heart of the cause and help those in need.”
As reported by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and the VS6 Partnership, foodbanks are providing record amounts of food – up 81% compared to five years ago – but the majority are receiving fewer donations with many dipping into reserves to meet demand, hence the importance of supporting local charities such as foodbanks and soup kitchens.
Initially established to support the homeless local community, the charity has extended its reach to vulnerable families and individuals in order to meet the demands of the current climate.
Rob Holbrook, Managing Director at David Wilson Homes North West, said: “As a leading developer it’s really important that we support the community in the areas in which we build.
“Southport Soup Kitchen is working hard to support its local community and we are happy to support the charity with a donation to a project which helps it expand its reach in the community.”
