Leading housebuilder David Wilson Homes has contributed £1,000 to The Wingate Special Children’s Trust in Nantwich to help enhance the facility for disabled and disadvantaged children across Cheshire.
The donation from the Warrington-based developer will go towards cleaning the space out the front of the facility, removing and clearing the weeds, and purchasing new furniture for a memorial space in honour of a client who recently passed away.
It was made as part of the Barratt Developments Plc Charitable Foundation, which is designed to support national and local charities, large and small, across the UK to leave a legacy in the communities in which the housebuilder operates.
Jenny Monro, Fundraiser at The Wingate Special Children’s Trust, said: “We are the only facility in the Cheshire area to offer these activities for vulnerable disabled young people and adults. Our professional, qualified sports coaches are trained to a very high level and thoroughly understand the diverse needs of those who access our services.
“We endeavour to improve the physical health and mental well-being of disabled children and young adults to reduce inequality and isolation that is experienced by many on a daily basis. We do this, by providing specialist respites holidays and recreational activities for the and their carers.
“Any donations make a huge difference to the charity. We all rely on support of the local community, through their fundraising efforts and volunteering at the centre. Volunteering creates a feel-good factor for those that take part and the local events really help create a community spirit, which The Wingate Centre is heavily part of.”
Established in 1988, the charity has been dedicated to enriching the lives of individuals with all levels of disability or who are disadvantaged.
The Wingate Centre is set in approximately three acres of private grounds and features a 22-bedroom specialist residential building, accommodating up to 50 individuals with disabilities and their carers at any one time, supported by full catering and dining facilities. There’s also a 7,000-square foot fully-fitted gymnasium, recreation hall and extensive grounds containing disability friendly play equipment.
Activities run by the charity include one-to-one disability fitness, assisted bike exercise, rebound therapy for vulnerable disabled children, arts and crafts, drama, dance and a sensory room.
Having operated to the best of its abilities during the pandemic, The Wingate Centre was forced to reduce its client sessions available each week, and dealt with increased overheads due to PPE and cleaning materials required, plus administration costs.
Rob Holbrook, Managing Director at David Wilson Homes North West, said: “We were delighted to hear about the work of The Wingate Special Children’s Trust and it’s a privilege to be able to support the charity’s admirable efforts.
“As a leading housebuilder, it’s important to us that we contribute to the charities in the areas in which we build, and we hope our donation will help the Centre’s maintenance projects.”
