Abbey College Manchester is encouraging a community culture, with a house system inspired by the city of Manchester.
The leading independent college has developed the structure, consisting of a trio of houses, to create cohesion between the year groups, while engendering a sense of competitiveness through inter-house competitions and activities.
House names were selected through a rigorous process, using the college’s residing city as inspiration. Following a series of nominations, the suggestions were grouped into categories including distinguished Mancunians, notable buildings and famous rivers, the staff and returning students reached a concluding vote of landmark buildings, aptly naming the three houses Bridgewater, Gaskell, Rylands.
Staff members are also grouped into houses with Tutors, Head of Houses and Assistant Head of Houses working to support and promote house identity and common goals.
Principal at Abbey College Manchester, Liz Elam, commented, “We are very excited about our newly formed house system, nurturing a community culture and giving our students a sense of belonging for the time they are at the college, be it one, two or three years.
“While encouraging healthy competition, the new houses promote our students to take pride in the part they play in the college and everything that they do, striving to be the best for them and their house.”
