Shocking figured reported by the Manchester Evening News in 2017 highlighted that Greater Manchester had a higher rate of fuel theft-related crimes than anywhere in the UK.

It was reported that over £250,000 of fuel was stolen in the region in 2015. UK wide this figure rises to £1.4m of fuel stolen from businesses.

Fuel supplier Beesley Fuels shares tips to secure your stored fuel as stolen fuel results in not only a cost for the business but also lost productivity which is an additional cost, and another reason to ensure your fuel is secure.

4 top fuel theft prevention tips:

#1 Use Tank Monitoring Systems

When working with a trusted red diesel supplier you can speak to them about a fuel management system. Beesley Fuels for example supply a fuel management service for your red diesel, and other fuels to ensure you never run out of fuel by monitoring your fuel levels.

Having a third party keeping an eye on your fuel levels for you and having equipment in place to this end is a big deterrent for would-be thieves. As a bonus, this will also help mitigate or identify other potential issues, such as a leaky tank.

#2 Use security monitoring systems & alarms

Just like an old fashioned yellow box on the front of a house, a visible alarm system, or CCTV cameras can be a powerful deterrent. Have a CCTV camera in range of your fuel supply if you don’t already and you can significantly reduce the risk of theft.

In the case of an alarm system, the noise itself can stop a theft in progress and prevent them from taking the fuel.

#3 Consider the location of your fuel supply

A fuel tank should, of course, be located outdoors, but you should have secure access where possible. If you work on a farm, for example, keeping your fuel tank in a well-lit area – or getting some lights for your current area can make a big difference. If you obscure your tank, it’ll also provide cover for any would-be thieves.

#4 Put procedures in place for accessing your fuel

We’re not talking about adding too much red tape to your business, but a simple procedure can help keep your fuel secure.

If you have an electronic tank, ensure you can lock it using it’s features when not in use, and utilise these features. Pump controls should also be located in a secure area, ideally not right next to the tank, even a short distance away will help.

If you have a manual tank, the nozzle should be locked away or secured while not in use so your not making life easy for any criminals.
