Wynsors World of Shoes is encouraging shoppers to invest in a specialist driving shoe which could not only help drivers to avoid jaw-dropping penalty fines but lead to safer driving in the sunshine. The new range of shoes has been introduced after recent reports have shown that driving in flip-flops could lead to serious accidents and hefty fines up to £5,000.

Most Brits will slip on the lightweight shoe during the summer months, but the unstable shoe has been in the spotlight recently for its unsuitability whilst driving. Slipping on your flip-flops before a drive could have risky consequences, including a potential nine penalty points on your license or a ban from driving completely.

The leading northern shoe retailer, Wynsors World of Shoes has stocked up on a range of ‘driving shoe’ alternatives which boast the benefits of the flip-flops without the high risks. The range includes breathable and flexible footwear from well-known brands such as Skechers.

With the Highway Code stating in Rule 97 that all drivers must have “footwear and clothing which does not prevent you using the controls in the correct manner”, the overly flexible flip-flop could leave many drivers at risk of entering illegal territory.

·         You should have a sole no thicker than 10mm and the sole should not be too thin or soft.

·         It should provide enough grip to stop your foot slipping off the pedals.

·         It should not be too heavy.

·         It should also not limit ankle movement.

·         In addition to this, it needs to be narrow enough to avoid accidentally depressing two pedals at once.

Ray Bentham, store manager at Wynsors World of Shoes Salford, said; “It’s shocking to hear that slipping on a pair of flip-flops for a journey can lead to so many problems and risks. Footwear is always an important element whilst driving but not many people would expect their shoes to be a factor in breaking the law.

“Our customers look at flip-flops because they’re lightweight and allow your feet to breathe properly on hotter days, but there are so many options that are safer for driving. I’ll be the first to encourage people to look at the brilliant range after hearing about some of the consequences.”

With the shocking numbers of drivers ending up in serious crashes which lead to both injuries and fines, the push for driving shoes could be welcomed by drivers who are looking for a comfortable summer shoe that fits the bill.
