TWO community-based charities in Greater Manchester have been awarded £500 in grants from wealth management company Equilibrium Asset Management.
The Anthony Seddon Fund has scooped £400 to go towards setting up a LGBTQ support group for young people aged 16 to 25 years to provide information, advice, peer support and wellbeing activities.
The peer support mental health charity was set up by Anthony Seddon’s family following his tragic suicide in 2013. Run by two members of staff and 51 volunteers, many who live long term with mental health issues, the centre in Tameside provide arts and crafts activities, and holistic therapies.
It also runs a drop-in service for people struggling with mental health, offering peer support and organised activities.
Welcoming the donation, Anthony Seddon fund founder Donna Thomas, said: “This grant will enable young adults from our LGBTQ community to establish a safe space in which they can access the advice and support they require. It is so important that all sections of our community feel valued and supported in their own neighbourhood.”
A not-for-profit community café in Heald Green that aims to combat loneliness and isolation has also scooped £100 in this round of funding.
Café Unity provides light snacks and drinks while providing a place for local people to meet.
Cafe Unity volunteer Margaret Burns said: “This grant will help us to continue to offer a warm and friendly, safe environment for local residents from our diverse community to meet, socialise, reduce social isolation and enhance community cohesion.”
The Wilmslow-based wealth management company has run the scheme since 2015 and has awarded over £14,000 in funds to community groups to date.
Reviewed quarterly, Equilibrium says applications to the third round of this year’s community support scheme can be submitted up until 23rd September.
Projects that promote party political activities or religious causes, projects that benefit or involve animals and commercial enterprises are not accepted.
