Virgin Trains marked this year’s Global Scouse Day by providing 100 Scouse meals to the Whitechapel Centre, a leading homeless and housing charity for the Liverpool region.
The local dish was created by Virgin Trains Chef Trevor Wardale, whose recipe came out tops in a staff competition. Trevor was on hand today to help prepare the meals onboard, before dropping them off at the centre, just a stone’s throw away from Liverpool Lime Street station.
“As a kid I always remember tucking into my mum and gran’s scouse,” explained Trevor. “It’s the perfect meal for the cold weather! It was incredibly humbling to have visited The Whitechapel Centre today and get a feel for the great work they do for the city’s homeless.”
“We’re overwhelmed by such a kind gesture,” explained Russell Ainslie, Outreach Manager for the Whitechapel Centre. “With seventy people expected at the centre tonight, it will be great to treat them to a bowl of Scouse. The importance of hot food cannot be overestimated, and we are incredibly grateful to Trevor and all at Virgin Trains for thinking of us.”
The idea to donate the food came from Virgin Trains Onboard Manager Gary Campbell.
“We’ve supported Global Scouse Day for a number of years now and it has gone down a storm with our customers. This year however I wanted to bring our support back to Liverpool, as its very much about the people of the city and our heritage. That’s why we we’re delighted to be able to help The Whitechapel Centre, who deserve great credit for the vital service they provide to people who have fallen on hard times.”
